Trending: Ben Seibel

Last week, we were honored to be included in the New York Design Center's "What's New, What's Next" event.  In collaboration with Michelle Adams (LonnyMag), we led a group through the new designs and trends happening this fall at the Pearson showroom. Decidedly, the vintage masculine/MadMen trend is in full effect!  In that spirit, today we feature a designer of Don & Betty's time: Ben Seibel.

Ben Seibel (1918 -1985) was born in Newark, NJ and then moved to NYC where he studied architecture at Columbia, which was interrupted to serve in the US Army in 1945.  Returning from armed service, he changed his focus and enrolled at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for Industrial Design.  Before completing his studies at Pratt he set up his design studio, where he designed a variety of goods including dinnerware, glassware, stainless steel flatware, metal and wood tabletop accessories, furniture and lamps.

He is definitely the Jonathan Adler of a previous time and he confirmed the study of sculpture was "one of the most important forces in his approach to design"*. We are most smitten with his brass bookends. These pictured were all found via 1stDibs, but we often come across great Ben Seibel finds on ebay, etsy and auctions...a great way to add a little Mad Men chic to your shelves.
